Be Fruitful and Multiply – Noahic Covenant — The BIRTH CONTROL Movie Project
After the Great Flood, the Lord reiterates the Dominion Mandate. This is important because Noah, and those of later generations, may have been inclined to think that God was done with mankind. God saw man’s unbridled wickedness, expressed sorrow at his eternal sin, and determined to destroy them. But, this restatement of the Dominion Mandate indicated that there was still a future for man in God’s eyes.
Also, it is clear enough that Noah himself obeyed the Dominion Mandate that he literally ruled over most of the world – animals, birds, and plants brought into the ark; he is also the head of his household, which is saved because of his righteousness. Noah was a “preacher of righteousness” (2Pet 2:5) and an “heir” of what he preached (Heb 11:7).
Note that there are 3 distinct instructions in this verse:
- [#1.] Be fruitful and multiply
- [#2.] A man who can eat meat, no longer a vegetarian
- [#3.] death penalty
- [#1.] Be fruitful and multiply
Some say that the command to “be fruitful and multiply” was given only to Noah and his sons. That doesn’t make much sense, since Shem, Ham and Japheth can only have so many children. Thus, the command to “replenish the earth” clearly had to continue for many generations. Also, most Christians today eat meat and many are for the death penalty. It is inconsistent to say that the commandment to “be fruitful and multiply”, which appears twice, need not apply today while holding the other commandments.
