carafem Fights Georgia’s Abortion Ban in Court

In an unprecedented action last week, a Georgia appeals court allowed a six-week abortion ban to take effect immediately.

carafem’s Atlanta health center and the Virtual Visit Center are both seeing clients as soon as this happens. With broken hearts, we were forced to turn away over 100 clients and help them find alternative care options. Today, the center is open and provides abortion care within the legal boundaries of the new restrictions, but it is six weeks before most people find out they are pregnant.

We will not go down without a fight.

Just yesterday, carafem joined a lawsuit to try to block this ban. Representatives of the American Civil Liberties Union, carafem and other abortion providers and advocates, along with reproductive justice collective Sister Song, came together to fight the six-week ban on abortion care. Several carafem clients added their voices as affidavits to the argument, expressing fear and frustration at the loss of their bodily freedom. Join us in the fight by donating today.

Severe abortion restrictions affect millions.

carafem has provided compassionate, high-quality abortion care in Georgia since 2016, and has provided reproductive health services to thousands of people. For years, abortion has become increasingly difficult to access, especially in the South, as political attacks and legal restrictions have intensified. But in the recent Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, abortion bans and severe abortion restrictions affect millions of people across the country. We know that abortion restrictions aggregate and disproportionately impact low-income people, BIPOC, undocumented and migrant people, LGBTQIA+ people, people with disabilities, people living in rural areas, and others still facing oppression.

On July 20th when a Georgia court upheld a ban on abortion after fetal heart activity was detected, the restriction began immediately, forcing abortion providers to turn away many people seeking abortion care. Before this action, Georgians could seek the abortion care they needed in their home state up to 22 weeks of pregnancy. However, today many people are forced to travel hundreds of miles to Florida or North Carolina to receive abortion care past six weeks.

carafem continues to provide abortion care in Georgia.

carafem is a proud abortion provider, and will continue to serve our communities within the boundaries of these restrictions. carafem is committed to doing what it takes — including holding states accountable in court — to fight for everyone’s right to abortion care.
