Donald Trump Attacks Ron DeSantis Again for Signing Bill Protecting Babies From Abortion

Donald Trump went after Ron DeSantis again today over the heartbeat bill the pro-life Florida Governor signed to protect babies from abortions.

In a new interview with Newsmax, Trump called DeSantis a derogatory name and claimed that “many” people oppose the heartbeat law even though polling data shows most Florida residents and most of Americans are pro-life and support heartbeat laws to protect babies.

“Now DeSantis, or Ron DeSanctimonious as I call him, he came out with six weeks. Other people agree with it. And a lot of people don’t,” Trump told Newsmax.

Trump touted the kind of deal he believes he could reach on abortion if elected president. Trump offered no details on what the deal would be but claimed it would appeal to everyone across the country.

“We’re in a position now – and I’m going to lead the charge – we’re in a position now where we’re going to get something that the whole country can agree, and that’s only because I took us out of Roe v. Wade where pro-life people really have nothing to say,” he said.

Asked to offer more details, Trump indicated only that he was in a “very strong negotiating position.”

“But in pro-life, I will tell you what I did in Roe v. Wade, no one else, for 50 years they have been trying to do this. I did it. And now we’re in a position to make a very good deal, and a deal that people want,” Trump concluded.

Trump did not explain what a potential deal might be, but he may be referring to a 20-week ban or some other national ban on late-term abortions.

Although polls show that Americans are pro-life and strongly support a ban on late-term abortions, Trump will have a tough time getting any such proposal through Congress as he will surely press pro-abortion Democrats are pushing such legislation in the Senate.

Trump’s new comments are the second time he has attacked DeSantis for signing a pro-life bill and DeSantis responded — saying he was “proud” of signing legislation to save babies from abortions.

DeSantis made Florida the next state to officially protect the lives of unborn children after Roe was overturned last summer. Pro-Life Americans from across the country celebrated the new law, which protects babies whose heartbeats are easily detectable and whose life has existed for a month and a half from conception.

But as LifeNews reported, Trump said the 6-week abortion ban signed by DeSantis that protects unborn babies with beating hearts from dying in abortions is potentially “too harsh.”

“He’s got to do what he’s got to do,” said Trump when asked about Florida’s six-week ban. “If you look at what DeSantis has done, a lot of people don’t know if he knows what he’s doing. But he signed on for six weeks, and many people within the pro-life movement feel that’s too harsh.

When asked about whether he would support a six-week ban, Trump replied, “I’m looking at all the options.”

“For 50 years, they’ve been trying to get rid of Roe v Wade. I did it. No one else can do that but me. And I did it [by nominating] three great judges among the Supreme Court Justices. And I did that,” he said.

“I look at all alternatives. I’m looking at many alternatives,” Trump added when asked if six weeks was too harsh. “But I was able to bring us to the table by ending Roe v. Wade. That was the most important thing that happened for the pro-life movement.”

A reporter asked DeSantis about Trump’s remarks and Florida’s governor said Trump was wrong about pro-lifers who think protecting babies from abortions is “too cruel.”

“Protecting an unborn child when there is a visible heartbeat is something that almost, probably, 99% of pro lifers support,” DeSantis said. “I signed the bill. I’m proud to do it. He will not answer whether he will sign or not.”

“It’s something that other states like Iowa under Governor Kim Reynolds have adopted,” he added.

That response echoed what DeSantis said when he signed the bill.

“We are proud to support life and family in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said when he signed the legislation. “I applaud the Legislature for passing the Heartbeat Protection Act that expands pro-life protections and provides additional resources for young mothers and families.”

The law will save thousands of lives annually and provide $25 million in aid to women and families

In a post earlier this week on Truth Social, Trump took credit for ending Roe v. Wade and all pro-life laws passed by states to protect babies from abortions.

Trump said he “was able to kill Roe v. Wade, which shocked everybody,” and put the movement in a “strong negotiating position.”

“Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever was finally agreed upon,” he wrote. “Without me the pro Life movement continues to lose. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”

Imaginary claims do not equate to reality.

President Trump certainly deserves credit for naming the justices to the Supreme Court who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. He deserves credit for a staunchly pro-life administration. And she deserves the support of pro-life Americans if she is the nominee against pro-abortion president Joe Biden.

But the pro-life movement has been fighting abortion every day for nearly 50 years — working feverishly to protect babies state by state and get the right justices on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe. Pro-Life Americans have been fighting to protect babies from abortion for decades even before Trump became pro-life in the years before his presidential run.

Trump owes a debt to a pro-life movement that worked tirelessly to elect him to radical abortion activist Hillary Clinton and to pro-life Americans who voted for members of the Senate who confirmed the judges of Trump.

And the killing of pro-life laws that protect babies from abortion in more than a dozen states because of the Dobbs decision is not being done by Trump.

Some of the abortion bans were passed before Dobbs, with states approving trigger laws to ban abortions when that day comes. Other states have passed bans on abortions at various times – none of which Trump has publicly supported. These bans are the result of pro-life advocates and pro-life lawmakers in their respective states fighting off Democrats, the abortion industry and the liberal media who have thrown them millions of dollars and huge packages of lies. In none of these states did Trump speak for the legislation or refute the litany of lies about the bills.

In fact, in a recent interview, Trump has refused to take a position on these pro-life laws to protect babies and not clearly support them. Additionally, Trump criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, saying the bill the governor signed to protect babies with a beating heart from abortion is potentially “too harsh.”
