When the Israelites were in the wilderness, preparing to go to Canaan, God repeated His command to be fruitful. Yahweh told his people that…
“30 “I will drive them [the Canaanites] little by little before you, until you become fruitful and possess the land. … 31b “for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you shall drive them out before you.”” (Ex 23:30, 31b NAS95)
So, in this case, God’s command is in the form of a promise. Cultivating the commandment produces the fruit of promise. The Lord will gradually drive out the inhabitants of Canaan while the Israelites multiply fruitfully to fill the land and conquer the power and completely possess the former pagan region.
