Today, a judge struck down Georgia’s early abortion ban as unconstitutional on the grounds that at the time the ban was passed in 2019, Roe v. Wade is still the law of the land.

Statement from Melissa Fowler, Chief Program Officer of the National Abortion Federation:

“This is another critical win for abortion access after last week’s midterm results showed that voters across the country overwhelmingly support their and their neighbors’ ability to access the abortion care. While this decision provides much-needed relief, this ban should not have been allowed to take effect in the first place. Every week it sits means devastating consequences for the people of Georgia—especially for Black and low-income communities and others denied care in their home state. The ban forced patients to travel long distances and overcome additional obstacles or remain pregnant against their will.

Today’s decision is only the first step in protecting abortion access in the state and unfortunately, we know the fight does not end here. The effects of Dobbs The decision continues to reverberate across the country, and we must continue to fight each and every anti-abortion politician and piece of legislation that threatens our reproductive rights. We will continue to work with our members and other advocates to ensure that harmful policies like this Georgia ban are not allowed to stand.

We remain committed to helping anyone, regardless of their income, race, or zip code, access abortion care. Anyone in any state can call the NAF Hotline at 1-800-772-9100 to understand their options and get the help they need, whether it’s help finding a provider, making travel arrangements to another state, or funding their care.”
