How to Make the Holidays Extra Special as a Surrogate
The holidays are a time for gathering with loved ones and making great memories. But when you’re a surrogate, this season can be even more meaningful. After all, you brought (or bring) perhaps the greatest gift for another family—a precious baby.
So, how can you do this time of year extra special as an alternative? We asked our surrogates and case managers, and they gave us great advice!
Reconnect with your intended parents
Life can be busy these days, and it’s easy to lose touch with people for long periods of time. But the holiday season provides a great opportunity to get back to the special people in your life.
Here are some of the ways our surrogates stay connected to their intended parents:
“We’re doing a Christmas video call with the family from my brother’s trip.”
“Sending Christmas cards! We send one and get one from our IPs!! <3 It's special to see a family so happy after having a child of their own and in such a beautiful time (holidays) it makes you feel so good and you know you've done something great!”
If you’re close to each other, you have a lot of options when it comes to celebrating. If the intended parents live further away, scheduling a phone call, sending a gift or care package, or even hosting a virtual dinner party are great ways to reconnect.
Revisit a meaningful place or memory together
The bond you develop with your intended parents is unique and powerful, and the holiday season is the perfect time to relive—or even recreate—a special memory.
Here’s what one of our surrogates did:
“This year was the first time I met my IP and her sweet boy since he was 1 due to covid. He is now 3 and we met to see the holiday light show in Sacramento. The same show that went to we shared with them the first time my kids met my IP. It’s great to see how smart a young man he has become.”
We love this idea!
Practice extra self-care
From traveling to see family to hosting get-togethers to scrambling to get your shopping done on time—this season can be stressful. So, it is important to take care of yourself during this time, especially if you are pregnant.
Be sure to listen to your body, understand your limits, and rest as much as possible. Stay hydrated and make healthy choices (at least most of the time). If you feel stressed or overwhelmed, talk to someone, and get help if you need it. It’s important not to spread yourself too thin. And try to carve out some quality “me” time—even a brisk walk around the block or 10 minutes of meditation can make a big difference.
We hope these tips help make this season even more special!
