Mother grieves loss of preborn son as two men are charged with his murder

A woman eight months pregnant expected a normal bus ride on October 4, but it turned into a nightmare after she was shot. Although she survived, her baby did not – and the men responsible are now facing murder charges.

Selena Santana, 29, was pregnant with her third child when the shooting broke out. “We weren’t prepared for it, we didn’t expect it,” he said NBC10 Boston. “We want our son, and now, you know, I haven’t seen Ezekiel, which is my son’s name.”

Two men, 30-year-old Johnluis Sanchez and 22-year-old Alejandro Ramos, have been arrested and charged with murder, but police believe a third suspect can still be free. In the surveillance footage, three men were fighting, which eventually led to gunfire, when a city bus suddenly drove by.

“The light turned green and the bus started to turn,” Santana said in a phone interview MassLive, added, “All of a sudden, I heard a big boom on the bus. I looked to my right and saw a piece of metal under the window that had been shot. I looked down when I heard the second shot and realized I had been hit.”

She was with Santana’s boyfriend, Ramón García, and they called the bus driver to stop. Santana was taken to the hospital and her baby was delivered; he was shot in the chest. The doctors tried to save him, but they could not.

“They have a bell that rings when a baby is born, and I just want it to be me and my son,” Santana said. The family launched a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses. “I just want to send him off in a nice way he deserves. We can give him a proper burial.”

Although Santana survived, she still faced complications, including abdominal injuries, bleeding, and a severed vein in her leg. “It’s a process for everything to heal,” he said. “Mentally it was really difficult. I can’t talk about it without crying.”
