New Argentina Vice President Wants to Pass Law Protecting Babies From Abortion

Victoria Villarruel, 48, Argentina’s vice president-elect, supported the repeal of the country’s 2020 abortion law that legalized abortion up to 14 weeks.

On November 19th, Javier Milei, a popular anti-abortion politician, was elected President of Argentina, obtaining 55.6% of the national vote, as reported of SPUC. President-elect Milei will take office on December 10th.

During his campaign, Milei promised to launch a referendum on Argentina’s abortion law, which he and his vice president, Victoria Villarruel, hoped to overturn.

Villarruel, now Argentina’s vice president-elect, is also an outspoken pro-lifer who has used his position as a writer and politician to condemn abortion and affirm “the right to life, because life begins at conception” , saying that his stance was not “a matter of religion” but of “pure biology”.

The congressman also announced that he would support the repeal of the “disastrous” law in 2020 that legalized abortion up to 14 weeks, explaining that “there is a lobby here that is also promoted from abroad, abortion is big business and there is a lobby that has promoted this issue”.

Milei is expected to give Villarruel, a lawyer, a significant role in his new government, saying: “Obviously, she will not have a decorative role… She is a very intelligent woman.”

Pro-life groups around the world hailed Villarruel as heralding a “new era”, with 40 Days for Life stating on X, formerly known as Twitter, that “we are delighted to anticipate his impact in promoting the sanctity of life”.

SPUC comments

A SPUC spokesperson said: “Victoria Villarruel is a new breed of unabashed pro-life politician who is not afraid to push back against the abortion lobby and its harmful ideology that harms so many women and unborn children.

“To create a world where abortion is unthinkable, it is very important that pro-life leaders stand up and be counted, as Villarruel did. We hope that he will help lead Argentina towards a brighter future for all life, including the unborn.
