Q&A: Postpartum Psychosis (PPP) January, 2023

You may have heard the term Postpartum Psychosis (PPP) in the news recently. In the news, there are times when we hear things that are scary, or we don’t understand, or we wonder if “it could be me.” PSI would like to take this opportunity to discuss PPP, and the support and resources available for those seeking help. As part of bringing awareness to this topic, we also want to provide resources for families and professionals and re-introduce the PSI Yates Children Memorial Fund’s Legal Justice Program.

What is Postpartum Psychosis? Postpartum Psychosis falls under the larger category of Perinatal Mental Health Disorders. It occurs more frequently than depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders – occurring in approximately 1 to 2 in every 1,000 deliveries, and is often unrecognized, ignored, or inadequately treated. Of that number, 4% of those involved infanticide.

What are the symptoms of PPP?

Symptoms of postpartum psychosis may include:

  • Delusions or strange beliefs
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there)
  • Feeling very annoyed
  • Hyperactivity
  • Decreased need or inability to sleep
  • Paranoia and suspicion
  • Rapid mood swings
  • It’s hard to talk sometimes

The most important risk factor for postpartum psychosis is a personal or family history of bipolar disorder, or a previous psychotic episode. (This is a risk factor, but not always present, and does not mean that psychosis is certain to occur)
