Resources for Raising Conscious Kids: December 2023 Edition

As an agency, Bridgetown Baby is deeply committed to tackling bias ourselves, building our skills, and creating an inclusive model of care that truly serves our clients and contributes to culture change. This is work we can all do. It starts with us; it continues with our children – and we are their most important teachers. Each month, we’ll share resources for expanding perspectives, talking to kids about prejudice, celebrating diversity, and actions our families can take to create a world we can all live in.

In cultures around the world, settling into the darker, darker winter months comes with rituals and practices that bring light into homes and lives.

The Shortest Day: Celebrating the Winter Solstice offers a gentle account of solstice celebrations in different ages and geographies, while its many sunny and yellow illustrations literally light up dark afternoons or quiet evening story times .

Older children may enjoy finding similarities (or contrasts) with their own families’ celebrations, and while the longer form of storytelling may be a bit much for younger readers, a page or two of narrative can only be right when it includes some breaks to teach. the colors and creatures included in the pages. For families celebrating the solsticeit’s a great companion volume, and for any family, it’s an opportunity to appreciate cultural practices over time.
