Resources for Raising Conscious Kids: January 2023 Edition

As an agency, Bridgetown Baby is deeply committed to tackling bias ourselves, building our skills, and creating an inclusive model of care that truly serves our clients and contributes to culture change. This is work we can all do. It starts with us; it continues with our children – and we are their most important teachers. Each month, we’ll share resources for talking to kids about prejudice, celebrating diversity, and actions our families can take to create a world we can live in.

Bringing in the New Year revive Lunar New Year traditions for young readers.

Grace Lin’s delightful story, narrated by the young protagonist, begins with a family preparing for their most important holiday of the year. As the book progresses – leading up to a bright and cheerful three-page fold-out depicting the moment of New Year’s arrival – elements of a traditional Chinese New Year are highlighted as the narrator becomes more excited (and somewhat impatient) to start the New Year.

Families celebrating the Lunar New Year may find aspects or variants of their own celebrations reflected in this sweet story. For families of diverse traditions, Lin’s story and engaging illustrations offer a joyful window into a holiday marked by 1.5 billion people in many cultures around the world.
