But it doesn’t have to be this way. You can still create something insanely beautiful at home and a backyard picnic is perfect! Planning a stylish picnic at home

So, where to start, what to do, how to look at what you really want, especially if you’re not sure which direction you want your function to go.

Sit with some ideas for a day or so as this will help your mind wander and love the best results. Close your eyes and let the thoughts arise and ask yourself “is this what I want”. Is your style loud and proud or soft and intimate? Do you have expensive tastes or are you happy with a small cheese platter?

It may seem silly to ask yourself these questions, but it can definitely help create a plan and start guiding you in the right direction.

Top tips for picnics at home

STEP 1 – THE THEME

First, set a theme for your backyard picnic.

Everything works well around a theme and can set the foundation for the rest of the planning. It can be a color theme, a place you’ve visited theme, a place you want to visit or something that’s really a waste if you miss something really good. Write down all your ideas on a piece of paper, circle the ones that really stand out… let the pen do the talking

STEP 2 – THE INVITATION

Next, find out who will be there. Do you keep the backyard picnic just between the two of you or is it a family affair. Will you be inviting friends to join online? Or, will you ask the neighbors to picnic on the fence with you?

Be creative and draw an invitation or create a poster/invitation online. Or if DIY isn’t your thing, search online for invitations. Etsy or Paperless Post are both great online options.

STEP 3 – THE STYLING

Pallets or low tables can really help set the mood. Go to any industrial yard and they’ll let you take their pallets for free. Remember to check for nails and be sure to sand to avoid splinters.

Alternatively, use a small coffee table and throw a tablecloth or sheet over it. Look around the house for rugs, blankets, throws and other pieces of material in different colors, styles and textures.

You will be surprised at what you can find. Mixing rather than matching is key here to create soft boho vibes.

Find a selection of pillows and ottomans in a variety of colors, styles, and textures.

Table items can be styled differently for small jars with flowers, candles, or anything else you find around the house. Pretty and soft or boho and vintage, the options are endless.

Fresh flowers can transform a space into something magical. Flowers bring life to any event and supporting small businesses in these tough times will help pay it forward.

If you can’t afford fresh, fake can work just as well. Or get some from the garden. Use old jars from the kitchen to arrange your flowers.

A boho backyard picnic isn’t complete without a mini drinks station. Use chopping boards, wooden boxes, or other items you find around the house to create a small area for drinks.

Finally, add some lights – battery operated fairy lights are my go-to to transform any space, a small tepee, and even create your own little fort with some sheets and rope.

Oh and don’t forget glasses for your bubbles, a champagne bucket, and ice for your drinks if it’s a real celebration!

STEP 4 – FOOD AND DRINK

Now think about the menu for the evening.

Do you love to prepare food or do you like to order uber meals?

Do you like to cook like an Indian? If so, order and show in the beautiful kitchen equipment.

Or do you like nibbles and easy-to-eat items, so create a small plate of ready-to-use treats.

Keep it simple and sweet with the DIY option from home, or ask a local catering company to deliver something pre-prepared.

Finally, add some drinks to your menu. Do you want champagne, wine, beer, or punch? Prepare your drinks list and have everything accessible and ready to go.

STEP 5 – THE AGENDA AND BACK UP PLAN IF ANY

Of course, we always need a plan b in case the weather spoils our plans. If you’re going to have a picnic outside, is there a space that will look just as good inside? Can you move the location at the last minute without it stressing you out more than you need to?
