Abortion is a key issue in this year’s midterm elections, with several states voting to protect the right in their state and many candidates using abortion access as part of their platforms during their campaigns.

Statement from Melissa Fowler, Chief Program Officer at the National Abortion Federation:

“Yesterday, voters across the country showed their support for abortion access, with critical wins on ballot measures in California, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, and Vermont. At a time when politicians in half of the states in the country are moving to ban or severely restrict abortion, these results send a clear message that the majority of people support access to abortion.

The Supreme Court’s decision to reverse Roe v. Wade earlier this year and the passage of harmful state abortion bans and restrictions emboldened voters to come out in droves to fight for their basic right to basic health care. We will not stop the fight. We see the importance of a national response to protect reproductive rights because state-level abortion bans have created an increasingly dangerous environment for patients who are not receiving the critical care they need, and for those providers who risk being criminalized just for doing their jobs and face. threats of violence and harassment from anti-abortion extremists every day.

As always, NAF remains committed to helping as many people as possible access abortion care, regardless of their income, race, or zip code. Anyone in any state can call the National Abortion Hotline at 1-800-772-9100 to understand their options and get the help they need, whether it’s help finding a provider, arranging travel to another state , or funding for their care.”
