GOP Presidential Candidate Doug Burgum Won’t Commit to Signing Bill Protecting Babies From Abortion

Republican presidential hopeful Doug Burgum said today that he will not commit to signing a national bill protecting babies from abortions if he is elected president.

His comments are unlikely to endear him to the majority of Americans who are pro-life and oppose ending the lives of babies in late-term abortions.

North Dakota’s Republican Governor signed a bill to ban abortions on unborn babies with beating hearts but he won’t make the same commitment to sign a national version of that pro-life bill or any such other laws as Congress may approve.

“I think the decision that was made to give power back to the states was the right one. And I think we’re going to have — we’re going to have a lot of division on this issue in America. And what’s right for North Dakota may not be right for in another state … the best decisions are made locally,” Burgum told CNN This Morning.

That answer appears to ignore the fact that a baby is still a baby regardless of state and abortions kill babies whether the abortion takes place in North Dakota, California or anywhere else.

“Does this mean as president you will not sign the federal abortion ban?” asked anchor Poppy Harlow in a followup question.

“That’s right,” Burgum said.

Such a ban may not even be a heartbeat law but could be a ban on late-term abortions, to at least protect babies from abortions in blue states where abortions are often performed. legal until birth.

“One of the most important things a CEO can do is really prioritize what that organization should focus on,” said Burgum, a former tech company CEO. “And the federal government has a limited set of powers that they must focus on.”

But the preservation of human life is a fundamental principle of good government and protecting the right to life of all citizens, born and unborn is the least of what government should do. The majority of Americans who are pro-life understand that and his answer will make it harder for him to get the Republican nomination.
