Induction for Gestational Hypertension, Unmedicated Birth and Tough Postpartum with PPA

Shortly after moving to a new state, Kelly found out she was pregnant, and when Covid hit at the start of her third trimester she found herself increasingly anxious and isolated. At 38 weeks she was diagnosed with gestational hypertension and an induction was recommended. Kelly was induced at 39 weeks and still went into labor without medication and her son was born on June 5th. Kelly immediately developed PPA and health anxiety and the postpartum period was filled with mental and physical health difficulties as well as breastfeeding issues. Eventually feeding became easier and anxiety began to improve around 6 months postpartum and at 1 year postpartum they moved again but this time closer to family. Last spring, Kelly completed a birth doula training and describes it as a wonderful experience, now in therapy and in control of her anxiety she realizes that there is no one size fits all definition of trauma and recognizes that while some may see his birth as a “textbook” induction, for him it was a traumatic experience that needed to be processed.
