Pro-Life Republican Jeff Landry Flips Democrat State, Wins Louisiana Governor Race

Pro-Life Louisiana gubernatorial candidate Jeff Landry won his election Saturday night, flipping the Democrat-led state to Republican. Landry, the state’s Attorney General, replaced Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards, who cannot be re-elected due to term limits.

Landry defeated pro-abortion Secretary of Transportation Shawn Wilson (D).

This is the first time Louisiana has had a Republican governor in 8 years.

“Today’s election says our state is united,” Landry said in his victory speech. “This is a wake up call and it’s a message that everyone should hear loud and clear, that we the people of this state will expect more from our government from here on out.”

By winning more than half of the votes, Landry avoided a runoff. Republicans are eager to regain control of a state that voted for Trump in the 2020 presidential election by nearly 20 points.

As attorney general, Landry courageously defended Louisiana’s protections for unborn children and their mothers. On his campaign website, Landry also highlights his 100% National Right to Life voting record while serving in Congress.

In contrast, Wilson opposes protections passed by the Louisiana Legislature for unborn children and their mothers. Unlike Governor Edwards, a pro-life Democrat who has signed numerous bills to protect unborn children and support pregnant women, Wilson’s position mirrors that of the national Democratic Party. “Obviously, we’re the pro-choice party and that’s more important now than ever,” said Katie Bernhardt, chairwoman of the Louisiana Democratic Party. “People have compromised on the issue before, but now they’re not willing to do so – and they shouldn’t.”

Landry fought and defended the state’s abortion ban in court, which now protects babies from abortions.
