Tips and Tricks for New Parents

Amazon is holding another October Prime Day this year, and we’ve got the information you need to get ready for it. The two-day sale, called Prime Big Deal Days, will take place on October 10 and 11 and will offer massive discounts on everything from everyday essentials to big-ticket items. This will be a great time for parents to pick up the items they need for their babies, themselves and their homes, as there are (literally) thousands of discounts available.

That may be easier said than done, though. While there will be countless items on sale, it can be overwhelming (not to mention, time-consuming) to sift through all the discounts and try to determine which deals are really worth taking advantage of.

Fortunately, there are some “hacks” you can use to maximize this two-day sale. Here are five helpful tips and tricks for parents who want to get the most out of Amazon Prime Big Deal Days.

#1. Create an Amazon registry with your Prime Account to get a discount on completion

If you or your partner is pregnant, you’ll want to make sure you’re signed up for an Amazon baby registry. That’s because Amazon registrants get what’s called a “completion discount” on eligible remaining items in their baby registries. For Prime Members, that means you can get 15 percent off the gear you still need.

Even if you’re not planning a baby shower, you can still create a private registry and use the discount for more expensive items (like a stroller, car seat or crib). Just remember that you can only use your discount after your enrollment has been active for two weeks and within 60 days before or after your due date.

So how does this help on Prime Day? Knowing that you have a discount at the store can help guide which purchases you should get as soon as possible and which you should hold off on.. For example, if the stroller you want is 12 percent off during Prime Day, you can pass on the sale because you know you can use your 15 percent discount on future clearances. The opposite is also true: If your favorite car seat is, say, 25 percent off on Prime Day, you’ll probably want to buy it right then and there, because that’s a more desirable discount.

#2. Beware of fake reviews

If you’re buying something new on Prime Day, you’re probably planning to browse the reviews section to make sure the product is worth buying. This is a smart idea, but beware of fake reviews. Some sellers and brands may leave fake reviews to make their products look better than they do, while others may leave false negative comments on competitor products.

So how do you know if a review is legit or not? If it includes pictures and goes into a lot of detail about why the product is good or bad, it’s more likely to be a genuine review. Look for an orange “Verified Purchase” stamp at the top of the review, as well — that means Amazon has confirmed that the person who wrote it bought or used the product and didn’t buy it at a deep discount. Third-party tools such as Fakespot can also check how legitimate a product’s reviews are.

#3. Add products to your cart or wishlist to get items quickly and get deal notifications

On Prime Day, sales come quickly, and items can sell out. If you know there are certain items you want to get during the sale (whether you’re hoping to get your baby’s crib at a discounted price or just want to stock up on diapers at a lower price), add them to your cart or request. list in advance. That way, it’s easier to buy them as soon as they go on sale (and before they go on sale!). You can too turn on notifications for when items on your list go on sale, as well as when deals you’re watching start. Just go to the Amazon mobile app’s notification settings and turn on “Viewed and Pending Deals.”

#4. Check out the Amazon Warehouse for big discounts on pre-owned, used and open-box products

Amazon Warehouse offers a wide range of used items, from smartphones to high chairs, at very low prices. This is a great way to reduce the amount of gear you need, and not to mention, is more environmentally friendly than buying new. While you may be nervous about the condition of a used item, don’t worry – every product is thoroughly checked by Amazon’s return specialists to make sure it’s in good working order during a 20-point inspection. They also check for things like packaging damage and missing accessories. Each item is graded to describe its condition (“like new,” “excellent,” “good” or “acceptable”) so you know what to expect.

On Prime Day, there may be additional deals on top of discounted Warehouse gear, helping you maximize your savings. Just remember that some items, such as car seats, breast pumps and cribs should not be bought secondhand for health and safety reasons.

#5. Seek CPSC approval when relevant

Hoping to buy a sleep-related item for your child on Prime Day, like a crib or bassinet? It’s a good idea to check the product description to verify that it complies with US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regulations. The CPSC enforces standards for tons of items to make sure consumers buy stuff that’s safe for their families. For example, when it comes to full-size cribthe CPSC doesn’t allow drop-side cribs and requires rigorous safety testing, firmer mattress support and more.

It’s never a bad idea to double check if the item no longer recalledeither, as some recalled items may still be online.
