THIS ARTICLE WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON SHELBYSAYWHAT.COM
When a new year arrives, it can feel like everyone is pushing us with health and fitness goals from detox teas to new workout routines. We think it’s time to change that and shift the focus. When making your new year’s resolutions this year, try shifting the focus to self-love and body acceptance-related goals. As we go through the different stages of motherhood, our bodies will inevitably change and it’s important to learn to show ourselves love through it all.
8 UNKNOWN DIETING OR WEIGHT LOSS RESOLUTIONS
Below you’ll find 8 resolutions about body acceptance from one of our incredible Rookie Mom Squad moms.
1. Diversify Social Media
The media we use matters. It sends subliminal messages to our self-esteem.
Now is the time to clean up your social media feed. Unfollow accounts that make your body look bad. follow accounts that inspire you!
Your feed should include women of all different body types.
2. FIND HAPPINESS IN FOOD
This is the year you find peace with your food. No more shame or guilt attached to what you eat. Gentle nutrition consistent with an intuitive approach to eating.
Here’s the thing, 95% of diets fail and diets often become a pathway to developing an eating disorder or disordered eating.
Start understanding intuitive eating with 10 principles of intuitive eating.
3. FIND A MOVEMENT YOU LOVE
It’s time to make our daily moves about loving our bodies and not striving for “results” or awards based on looks. The goal should be mindfulness, by being present in your body. Practice movement that sparks joy.
Start by learning how to listen to your body through your inner cues. How soon do you want to move? What intensity do you enjoy?
Remember that the goal is not to manage or lose weight. It’s about respecting your body where it is.
4. PRACTICE DAILY THANKSGIVING
Practicing daily gratitude sharpens our focus toward positive thinking. Start a daily gratitude journal.
“Learning show that people who kept a gratitude journal exercised more regularly, reported fewer symptoms of physical illness, felt better about their lives as a whole, and were more optimistic . It also showed that people who kept a journal were more likely to make progress toward their goals”. -lifehack.org
5. TRY A NEW STYLE
It’s time to stop hiding in the back of your wardrobe. Stepping out of our comfort zone may be the perfect way to start embracing the body we have NOW.
It’s important to remember to dress to impress yourself and not other people. If you have something you want to try like a bold red lip, a cool rancher hat, or a sexy body-con dress, now is the time to have FUN!
Being creative with your wardrobe helps you find YOUR style. When we feel inspired in our closet, we can show up with more confidence.
6. Stop BODY CHECKING AND COMPARISON
Nothing good comes from examining and comparing the body. It’s time to start actively choosing NOT to engage in these habits. Both body analysis and comparison suggest dissatisfaction with your body that is almost always inaccurate and self-harming.
Time to get to the root of the issue.
Consider – talking to a therapist, finding alternative strategies for dealing with your body anxiety, knowing your triggers, finding support.
7. DONATE CLOTHES YOU DON’T WEAR
It’s time to let go of the clothes that don’t serve you.
Our bodies are meant to ebb and flow. Despite what diet culture has taught you to believe, it’s perfectly healthy to fluctuate in your weight. Holding on to clothes that don’t fit “hopefully one day they’ll fit again” suggests that you’ll only be happy when your body fits that size again.
We need to start buying clothes that fit us now. Our lives are happening now. None of our “old bodies” or “maybe someday bodies”.
Donate, trade, or sell what doesn’t fit you and buy something nice for yourself.
8. GIVE YOURSELF DAILY PRAISE
When was the last time you gave yourself a compliment? A true, loving, and well-deserved compliment.
It all starts with our attitude. It’s quite simple, we can’t love our body if we don’t show it love.
It may feel awkward to begin with, but fake it till you make it girl. Practice daily positive affirmations. Say them out loud, write them on the mirror, keep them as the lock screen on your phone. Try to say 3 nice things to yourself every day.
My best advice is to talk to yourself the way you talk to your best friend.
Happy New Year Friends
Xx, Shelby
