Hawaiian newborn saved by bystander after being thrown in a dumpster

A newborn baby girl in Honolulu, Hawaii is currently in stable condition after a bystander rescued her from a dumpster on December 23.

According to Hawaii News Today, the incident occurred around 11:30 pm Saturday, December 22, 2023. A good samaritan, who asked not to be identified, explained that he heard a woman screaming and looked out his window to see her giving birth. To her horror, she saw him place her newborn in a nearby trash can and walk away. He then rushes out to save the baby girl.

“I just got it off the top of the trash can and it didn’t look like it was really hurt or anything,” the rescuer said. KHON. “It was crying when I took it out of the trash, which is a good sign.”

When emergency responders arrived, they took the baby to Kapiolani Medical Center, where he was reported to be in serious condition.

“It was like a dream almost, a scary dream, like a nightmare,” he said. “It’s very sad, a very sad moment. It’s really scary to think what would have happened if I wasn’t here.”

“I kind of broke down and started crying because I don’t know how someone could leave their child like that,” she added.

She said she was told the baby was ok. “The last thing I heard the baby was in stable condition,” she explained. “I thank God that I was here at home when everything happened so that I could get the child in time to save his life. It could have turned out very differently if I hadn’t heard the screams and wasn’t home.”

The mother was not immediately found, and a case of child abandonment was opened.

Every state has a safe haven law to reduce cases of infant abandonment like this one. In Hawaiiit is legal for a parent to surrender their infant within the first 3 days after birth to any hospital, fire station, police station, or emergency medical personnel, without fear of prosecution, if the infant is in “unharmed condition.”
