October 2023 Edition — Bridgetown Baby

In honor of National Hispanic Awareness Monththis month we dive into the colorful pages of yum! Mmmm! Que Rico! Sprouts of the Americas.

Through lively haiku, author Pat Mora celebrates the foods – including peanuts, blueberries, corn, potatoes, tomatoes, and more – that early humans cultivated, enjoyed and respected in America, and those that followed, for centuries. Rich illustrations show multiethnic and multiracial children and families interacting with animated versions of the foods they grow, harvest, prepare and eat.

Younger readers will enjoy the magical realism in these pages and have fun pointing out familiar foods, while older children will grow their understanding with the informative verses that accompany the gorgeous imagery. Everyone in the family can be inspired by a gentle focus on stewardship – caring for the land and its inhabitants, and sharing the food the world helps us with.

Search yum! Mmmm! Que Rico! at your local library, or purchase at your local independent bookstore or online at Powell’s.com.
