Former competitive figure skater and current sports broadcaster Tara Lipinski thought pregnancy would be easy, but quickly realized it would be anything but. On his hit podcast Tara Lipinski: Unexpectedly, the 1998 Olympic women’s figure skating champion offers a candid look at her difficult infertility journey spanning four years, including four miscarriages and multiple failed rounds of IVF.
But despite all this, there is an exciting prospect on the horizon! In episode 13 of the podcast released yesterday, Lipinski shared that she and husband Todd Kapostasy are officially expecting via surrogate.
“It was just so surreal. It can’t happen to us just like we didn’t get this news, it’s not happening to us. I almost couldn’t believe it,” Lipinski said on his podcast. “I was just sobbing. But like, the ugly sobbing of just a few years of all this trauma pouring out of my eyes.
“I don’t know how to describe it other than pure relief,” she shared when asked how she felt to learn the exciting news. “Obviously, happiness and thinking that maybe our lives will finally change and we won’t be the same, horrible hamster wheel.”

After several unsuccessful heart rate scans in the past, Lipinski was understandably nervous to hear the news and developed a special plan with her surrogate, Mikayla. “The plan was that he wasn’t going to FaceTime me or call me before there was an actual heartbeat because there was no way my heart was going to pick it up,” Lipinksi said on his podcast. “I don’t want to be on the phone while she’s getting ready or coming into the room or seeing the first part of the scan. I don’t really care. I don’t want to know about that. I just want to know if there’s a heartbeat.”
“So what I told her to do is if there’s a heartbeat to FaceTime me. And if there is no heartbeat to just please call us,” explained Lipinksi before revealing that he received a FaceTime where Lipinski cried, his wife was victorious around the kitchen.
“It felt like the sun was finally setting on our horrible fertility journey,” says Kapostasy.
