What to Wear for a Winter Maternity Shoot
Having a professional maternity shoot is something very special to me. I love looking back at those special photos, perhaps because they hold a deeper meaning for me because of our miscarriage history. As a result, I take them seriously 😉 Maternity shoots in the winter can be a bit tricky, so today I’m sharing some ideas on What to Wear for a Winter Maternity Shoot in case yours falls during the cold months!

Winter can be tricky if you want to have outdoor photos, depending on where you live. It’s all ice and snow here in Connecticut, and while I could have easily picked a nice indoor shoot, I wanted to take advantage of the stunning scenery we have here this time of year (even though I hate every bit of it) . At first, I wanted to shoot in actual snowfall, but the timing was really tricky and unplanned. That’s totally okay though because these photos on a frozen beach blow that out of the water.
Consider your landscape.
I love neutral colors, especially for timeless shoots like maternity, family, or engagement sessions. But my typical white and beige definitely wouldn’t work against a white background. Considering the landscape of your shoot location is important when initially deciding what you want to wear. I wanted a dress that really stood out against the white of snow and ice, and this blush turned out to be a great choice. Choose a color that will stand out against the background of your session.
Consider the climate.
IT WAS here in Connecticut in the month of January, so I knew I had to dress appropriately. It was still cold (even with LAYERS of leggings, socks, and warm snow boots underneath!), but I’m glad I chose a maxi style with long sleeves. Fully consider the weather, and dress accordingly. If you can’t find a long sleeve option, consider a dress that would look great with a cardigan! Chunky, cream and white colored cardigans always look good in professional shoots.
Go for solid colors.
Solid colors are more timeless than patterns and prints, and will highlight your baby bump even more. I find that prints tend to take the focus off the bump, which is not the goal for a maternity shoot. Adding texture (like the tulle skirt or sequin top of this dress) is even more beneficial. Lace is another great choice!
Dress for the day.
As I mentioned before, I have LAYERS under this dress because I know it will be cold. Luckily I have an awesome photographer I’ve worked with before, so we both knew we could shoot for about 20 minutes and probably get some great photos. I have a thick tank top, fleece leggings, 2 pairs of knee high socks, and snow boots under this outfit. The boots were a little hard to hide at times, but we made it work! My photographer also kept my jacket close to him so I could wear it while we changed locations.
Choose clothes that compliment your baby bump.
There are some styles of clothes that are better for pregnancy than others. You want the waistline to hit ABOVE your bump, which is an important part if the dress has a waistline. Fitted dresses are always gorgeous because they hug your body and really accentuate your bump. I share about it in this post on What To Wear for a Maternity Shoot (plus some beauty tips!) right here!
These are just a few of my favorite photos from my recent maternity session with Alicia Ann Photographers! I debated doing a shoot altogether given that this is baby #3, but I also realized it’s most likely my last baby and why not take advantage of the day 😉 I’m so happy I did!
